The oldest European-founded city in the Americas, Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone is a World Heritage Site and the ideal place to experience local culture and colonial architecture. Visit the 500-year-old Catedral Primada de América, then linger in the adjacent Parque Colón, a Spanish-style plaza that pulsates with activity. Sit on a bench, people-watch, take some photos or buy souvenirs. The Alcázar de Colón, a palace built by Christopher Columbus’ son Diego and now a museum, is also a must-see.
