OVERVIEW
Explore the islands of Finnøya and Ona – which are vastly different in size, population and culture – and come away with a deeper understanding of Norway’s diverse western coast. The adventure will begin with a meandering drive through a spectacularly scenic landscape of towering mountains and steep-walled fjords. A ferry will take you over to Ona, a fishing village with just a dozen or so full-time residents. As you will see firsthand, the best view of the island and surrounding sea is from Ona’s 19th-century lighthouse. A delightful lunch at a seaside hotel will highlight some of the local products. Continuing on, you will drive over the century-old cobblestone bridges at Skodje and back to Ålesund for a look at its inspiring Art Nouveau architecture, which replaced most every wooden building destroyed in a devastating 1904 fire.
