OVERVIEW
Discover why San Sebastian has come to be regarded as the Pearl of the Sea during a tour of this charming Belle Epoque resort city, and a visit to historic Hondarribia. Depart the pier for the drive to Hondarribia, or Fuenterrabia. Located near the French border, this town is divided into two parts. The upper section of town is a Medieval district featuring small alleys and old houses with carved eaves and wonderful balconies. The lower section is home to the fishermen's quarter. During a brief walking tour in the upper section, you will see the historic Parador Hotel, a splendid Medieval building that once served as a defense tower against French invasions. Next, you will proceed to San Sebastian, or Donostia. San Sebastian was made popular in 1886 by Queen Regent Maria Cristina, and has been a favorite amongst Spanish aristocracy ever since. It is now a relaxed family resort city, and plays host to the International Film Festival every September. Upon arrival, you will take a guided walking tour in the modern section of the city, and pass by the Cathedral of the Buen Pastor, Town Hall, Palace and Gardens of Miramar, built by Queen Maria Cristina. You will also see the theatre and luxury hotel named after the Queen. Your walking tour will continue through the Old Quarter, where you will find an eclectic blend of shops, bars, restaurants and squares. Although the city has burnt to the ground twelve times in its history, one street not destroyed by the Fire of 1813 contains some of its oldest buildings, including the Church of San Vicente. Following your visit to the Old Quarter, enjoy some free time for independent exploration. Prior to heading back to Santurtzi, a photo stop will be made at the Monte Igeldo Viewpoint. Here, you will take in panoramic views of the city, oyster-shaped Bay of La Concha, Mount Urgull, Mount Igueldo, and the Isle of Santa Clara. Afterward, you will rejoin the coach for the return drive to the pier and ship.
