OVERVIEW
Settle in for a wonderfully picturesque drive through the autonomous Basque Country to Bermeo, where you will delve into its fishing heritage and sample its renowned seafood. Founded in 1239, the town has preserved its traditional maritime charm as you will discover by walking along its narrow atmospheric streets. The Church of Santa Eufemia – Bermeo’s oldest building – has loomed above the port since the 13th century. Even so, the Arroyabe factory is probably better known as it cans Bermeo’s prized albacore tuna and anchovies. While touring the factory, you will learn how the fish are caught in the Bay of Biscay using sustainable and traditional methods and see how they are processed to ensure freshness and flavor. After sampling Arroyabe’s exquisite white tuna and meaty Cantabrian anchovies, you will understand why they have become so celebrated. As an accompaniment, you will be served txakolina, a slightly effervescent white wine synonymous with the Basque Country.
