Sail up-river to the centuries-old trading station of Albreda and gaze at the famous flagpole that, according to local lore, would guarantee freedom to any slave who touched it after escaping the fort on nearby Kunta Kinteh Island. Gain unique insight into Gambia’s poignant history of slave trade at the Museum of Slavery. You’ll walk to the nearby village of Juffureh, purported to be the birthplace of Kunta Kinteh, the central character in the renowned Haley novel and TV series. View the original home of Alex Haley’s great-great-grandfather, which stands near the village’s mosque and is still inhabited by the family. Re-board your boat for a satisfying lunch cruise to Kunta Kinteh Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is steeped in slave-trading history. Note: This tour utilizes a boat with an inside cabin, an open deck and minimal amenities. The inside cabin is not air-conditioned; windows will be kept open and fans will run to keep the inside of the boat as comfortable as possible. As the boat ride can be long, we recommend bringing along a book or crossword puzzle. The on-deck seating consists of plastic chairs not bolted to the floor; please use caution when moving around. The actual duration of the tour depends on the river’s current and tide. It is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. The Ferries are being worked on. If all goes well this tour will move to a mostly land tour. Roots by Land in 2025. It will offer accessibility to many more people. We will keep you posted on update this tour.
