Gain a historical understanding of Cartagena by visiting its ancient Roman theater, charming Old Town and an archaeological site from the 3rd century BC. Excavations have unearthed defensive walls and catacombs that lend great insight into the past. A photo stop at the hilltop fortress Castillo de la Concepcion will enhance your knowledge of Cadiz in the Middle Ages, much like touring the Roman theater will add to your comprehension of Cadiz in antiquity. While browsing the adjoining museum, parts of which are underground, you may see virtual images of the theater as it was originally built. Upon entering the open-air theater, you will likely be awed by its massive size, as the structure holds as many as 7,000 spectators. Continuing on, you will spend free time in Cadiz’s primary shopping boulevard, pedestrian-only Calle Mayor. Be sure to see the Christmas Fort that overlooks the harbor. It is extraordinarily photogenic.
