OVERVIEW
Enjoy an enlightening guided walk-through Corner Brook and discover the cultural and historical forces that shaped this vibrant city. For generations, the Mi’kmaq people lived in harmony with the land and sea in the Bay of Islands region, following seasonal patterns for hunting, fishing, and gathering. Their connection to this place is still felt today and provides an essential foundation to understanding the area’s past. In the 1760s, British explorer Captain James Cook mapped much of the western Newfoundland coastline, including the Bay of Islands. Corner Brook remained undeveloped until lumbering, salmon fishing and paper manufacturing began to prosper centuries later. In 1924, the Tudor-inspired Glynmill Inn was built to accommodate that growth and is now one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Another landmark is the war memorial, a powerful reminder of the soldiers from the surrounding Bay of Islands that died during World Wars I and II. The illustrations on the oversized letters of the colorful Corner Brook sign reveal even more about the history.
