OVERVIEW
Gain an understanding of Singaraja’s past by visiting two landmarks in this former Dutch colonial capital. Constructed in the 17th century, the Royal Palace predates the Dutch rule that ended in 1941. The palace once served the Kingdom of Bulelong that governed northern Bali for centuries. Inside, you will find shrines, temples and personal effects of the royal family, including books by descendant and novelist Pandji Tisna, who pioneered the Balinese tourism industry in the 1950s. The Chinese were also influential as you will discover at Ling Gwam Kiong, a brightly colored Chinese temple that overlooks Singaraja’s former port. Even though most of Bali is Hindu, the temple welcomes those who practice Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Highlights include hand-painted murals of deities and an entrance bridge decorated with intricately carved dragons that spans a lotus pond. A sumptuous buffet of Balinese dishes follows your exploration of this sacred site.
