OVERVIEW
Visit some of the most important historical attractions in the northern Ilocos region and sample delicacies that reflect the local cuisine along the way. In the city of Badoc, you will behold a 17th-century church that houses a statue of the Virgin Mary that was miraculously plucked from the sea according to local legend. Nearby, you will find the Juan Luna shrine, which celebrates the life of a Filipino painter that was an activist in the Philippine Revolution. A bit inland, you will browse memorabilia from former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos in the presidential center in his hometown of Batac. Marcos’ controversial rule spanned two decades, so there will be plenty to peruse in the collection. While pausing at the attractions, traditional Filipino finger foods will be served as appetizers as well as heartier empanadas. These popular fried-pastry snacks are typically filled with meat, egg and vegetables and then dipped in vinegar.
