Peel away the centuries in legendary Syracuse, a UNESCO World Heritage site brimming with gems from antiquity, the Middle Ages and beyond. Settle in for a picturesque drive south to Syracuse’s Old Town, an outstanding ensemble of medieval and Baroque buildings adorned with wrought iron balconies overflowing with flowers. Admire the enchanting Ortigia Island from where you’ll enjoy expansive views of the bay, and stroll to the superb Syracuse Cathedral, originally built in the 7th century over a Temple of Minerva and later utterly transformed in sublime High Sicilian Baroque style. Wander the landmark-ringed Piazza Duomo and proceed by coach to the ruins of the 5th-century BC Greek theatre, one of the largest and best preserved auditoriums of the ancient world. You’ll also see the 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, perhaps envisioning untamed animals and wide-eyed gladiators emerging from its remaining gangways. Nearby, find the fascinating Cordmaker’s Cave and the Ear of Dionysius, an artificial grotto whose name may refer to the 4th-century BC tyrant Dionysius’ supposed use of the cave’s excellent acoustics to eavesdrop on prisoners held in the cavern.
This tour includes a substantial amount of walking (2,5 km). It is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair or guests with mobility concerns. In the Old Town, buses must enter a parking area and guests must be prepared to walk approximately a half-mile to the city center. The order of sites viewed or visited may vary.
