OVERVIEW
Dine on classic Mediterranean dishes at a restaurant in the heart of Catania, a city that UNESCO recognized as a World Heritage site for its late Baroque architecture. While walking through the historic district, you will hear about the devastating eruption of nearby Mt. Etna in 1669 and the earthquake a few decades later that caused Catania and several surrounding cities to be rebuilt in the architectural style of the day. Although the ruins of ancient Greek and Roman theatres remain, much of Catania was constructed in the early 18th century atop hardened lava. Many of the older buildings were made with dark-gray volcanic tufa limestone, the reason Catania is sometimes referred to as the Black City. Following the walking tour, you will settle in for a delightful lunch with wine at Acqualavica, a restaurant with a number of volcanic tufa walls. The dishes will be distinctly Mediterranean with an emphasis on local ingredients.
