OVERVIEW
Explore two seaside fishing villages in the shadow of Mt. Etna that were heavily influenced by its volcanic eruptions. Aci Castello developed around an 11th-century Norman-built fort but it didn’t really grow much until an eruption destroyed some of the neighboring towns. Although the castle endured invasions, fires, earthquakes and volcanic damage, it has been restored as a museum and makes for a fascinating visit. Just up the coast, you will find Aci Trezza, another seaside village that was partially built from igneous stone from volcanic eruptions. From the main plaza, you will see three black volcanic stacks rising out of the sea. They are known as the Cyclops Rocks because according to legend the one-eyed giant hurled them at Ulysses to prevent him from leaving the island. You will have time to discuss both villages over a seafood lunch at a Catania restaurant named for the book “I Malavoglia,” which was set in Aci Trezza.
