Enjoy an immensely scenic driving tour of Cartagena with stops along the way for a closer look at the landmarks. While traveling through the affluent Manga neighborhood, you will see an abundance of historical Republican-style mansions. Still, few views rival the one you will be afforded from atop La Popa, the city’s highest point and the site of the 17th-century convent Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de la Popa. You will also pause at San Felipe de Barajas fort, an even older architectural treasure, before continuing on to the walled Old Town. It offers a wonderfully atmospheric setting to walk or roll, depending on your capabilities. Old Town is full of leafy plazas, including one named for Simon Bolivar, the revered leader that liberated Latin America from Spanish rule. You will also have the chance to explore the colonial San Pedro Claver Church and browse the shops now housed in a collection of former military dungeons.
