OVERVIEW
Explore the ruins of the only Mayan city-state on the sea and become immersed in the life and work of Mexico’s most iconic artist and feminist Frida Kahlo. Although not the largest or most elaborate archaeological site on the Yucatan peninsula, Tulum may be the most beautiful. The Maya built the walled city-state in the 11th century to control maritime commerce, and its excavated temples and buildings are spectacular, especially the tower El Castillo. You can also expect to see the Temple of Frescoes and the Temple of the Descending God. To more deeply understand the influence of Kahlo, you will browse the immersive exhibits in the Frida Kahlo by Woman Experience Museum. This untraditional setting uses extraordinary sensory experiences to present the most important events in the artist’s life, including the bus accident that left her in a body cast for months. Few museum experiences are so memorizing and transformative.
