OVERVIEW
Join a local Indian family in their home for an enlightening conversation and food tastings before continuing on to the village of Nadi to shop. Nearly half of all Fijians are of Indian descent, including the family that will welcome you into their private residence. They will happily share their cultural traditions and values while preparing various Indian foods for you to sample. The dishes will likely include an aromatic spiced curry and roti, a circular flatbread made primarily with ground wheat flour. The family will also show you some typical Indian clothing such as saris, which will offer another cultural perspective. Many Indo-Fijians practice Hinduism, and Nadi is home to the country’s largest Hindu temple, Sri Siva Subramaniya. After a guided tour of this ornate architectural treasure, you will be free to browse the local stores. Expect to find merchandise ranging from tropical clothing to reproductions of 19th-century cannibal forks.
