Discover the must-see attractions of the Snæfellsjokull Peninsula, a harsh but beautiful volcanic landscape that is a geological and natural wonderland. After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a gorgeous coastal drive, passing through one beautiful fishing village after another. In time you will reach Snæfellsjokull National Park with its namesake glacier looming atop a stratovolcano. The area has been famous since 1864, when Jules Verne used it as a setting in “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” The park’s landscape looks primeval in every direction, especially at Djupalonssandur, a jagged coastline strewn with large rocks. Sailors once demonstrated their strength here by lifting boulders to show that they were fit to work on ships. On the beach you can see the remains of a Grimsby fishing trawler that was wrecked there in hazardous weather in 1948. Next, you will visit Malarrif, an area noted for its volcanic pillars, which some people claim elves use as churches. Other highlights include the towering lighthouse at Malarrif and a visitor’s center, where you can learn about the curious geological formations. Continuing on, you will pass the Lóndrangar Cliffs and then arrive in the tiny fishing village of Arnarstapi where you will pause for photos. The idyllic setting boasts many interesting lava formations and an abundance of birdlife. Then it’s on to Budir, whose beach features yellowish sand instead of the pitch-black sand commonly found elsewhere. The modest church nearby is also noteworthy. Painted black, it sits in a lava field blanketed with lush grass, and the contrast is stunning, as is the ice-capped volcano in the background. After visiting the church, you will transfer back to the pier.
