Take an invigorating and enlightening walk around Grundarfjordur and on into the surrounding landscape, where you will find an idyllic waterfall. After walking from the pier, you will soon ascend a small hill that overlooks Grundarfjordur, a picture-perfect fishing village perched on a beautiful fjord surrounded by mountains. From this elevated vantage point, weather permitting, you will enjoy one of the most breathtaking vistas on Snæfellsnes peninsula. In particular, you will gaze upon the iconic Mt. Kirkjufell. Said to be the most photographed mountain in Iceland, Kirkjufell rises sharply from the shore to a height of more than 1,500 feet. It’s a barren, but gorgeous monolith that only the adventurous climb. Kirkjufell is Icelandic for “church mountain,” and you can’t help but feel a reverence for nature while standing in its presence. While you won’t venture up Kirkjufell, you will walk to an absolutely gorgeous waterfall near its base. The crystal-clear water is from glacier melt and reaches its highest volume during summer. The cascade in the foreground with Kirkjufell soaring beyond makes for a fantastic photograph. Returning to Grundarfjordur, you may see other inspiring sights such as fishing boats in the harbor and some of the residences built by the founding merchants from France. The town’s main church is also worth a look before you walk back to the pier.
