OVERVIEW
Behold one of the largest environmental projects in France—the renaturation of Tasdon Marshes on the outskirts of La Rochelle. A naturalist guide will show you how the salt marshes have been restored following years of neglect, a proliferation of invasive species and long periods of drought. These unfortunate conditions damaged much of the natural habitat and, as a consequence, wildlife suffered as well. Beginning in 2019, the marshes were reshaped and redesigned with new basins connecting them to the sea for improved water flow. The flora and fauna quickly rebounded, a process that the guide will explain in detail. Hundreds of species of plants and water birds now flourish in Tasdon Marshes, many of which the guide will point out and describe. While meandering about, you may see black swans, blue-winged teals, egrets and glossy ibises. Now restored to their natural state, the marshes have inspired other projects that will rehabilitate the environment.
