OVERVIEW
Discover how the past has affected the cultural heritage of Mauritius by visiting many influential historical attractions. For an authentic glimpse into daily life, you will begin with free time along the Caudan Waterfront. One of the most vibrant areas in Port Louis, it features an upscale shopping, dining and entertainment center and a traditional crafts market. A more panoramic view of the city awaits you atop Signal Mountain, home to the Catholic church Marie Reine de la Paix. Two popes have officiated Mass there. Port Louis’ colonial period will become the focus at the Eureka Creole Mansion. Built in 1830, the beautifully restored house is furnished with period pieces and its circular veranda alone contains 109 doors. The colonial house Domaine Les Aubineaux was constructed a bit later in the 19th century using salvaged wood such as ebony from abandoned ships. Those species of trees are rarely found on Mauritius today.
