OVERVIEW

These massive blubbery creatures are extraordinarily social animals that often communicate by bellowing and snorting at one another. Their most distinguishing feature is their tusks, which constantly grow and are used for multiple purposes – everything from poking exit holes in the ice from below to hauling themselves out of the water. The latter is the reason walruses are nicknamed “tooth walkers.” They use their long sensitive whiskers to help locate mollusks on the ocean floor where it is too dark to see. Although walrus look somewhat clumsy when moving about on land, they are surprisingly agile in the water and can swim up to 22 miles per mile.
