OVERVIEW
Walk through a reconstructed castle that has retained its Edo Period design and continue your exploration in the serene garden the covers the hill below. You will reach the castle by riding a cable car ropeway to the summit of Mount Matsuyama. The views of Matsuyama city and the sea beyond will be absolutely breathtaking as the ropeway carries you up the densely vegetated mountainous slope to Matsuyama Castle. The version that stands today is much like the castle’s original early 17th-century layout, one of the reasons it is so revered. The main and highest tower – known as a tenshu – is tiered, another architectural element that was prominent in 1602, when the castle’s construction began. After descending on the ropeway to the Ninomaru Historic Site Garden, you will be free to wander about as you please. The garden is divided into two sections, one with a decidedly floral appeal, the other revolving around water features.
