OVERVIEW
Behold the wonders of nature in Fitzroy Gardens and see other enlightening landmarks while driving through Melbourne, the engaging capital of the state of Victoria. The gardens were laid out in 1859 and follow a classic Victorian design. As you stroll the garden paths, the guide will describe the more unusual flora – perhaps the stump of a 300-year-old redgum tree adorned with fairy carvings– and show you the outside of the cottage once owned by the parents of Captain James Cook, the English explorer that mapped parts of Australia in 1770. Elsewhere in Melbourne, you will view the fashionable St. Kilda neighborhood, colonnaded Parliament House, grand Victorian-era Windsor hotel and the Princess Theatre, which is supposedly haunted by an opera singer that died on stage – literally – in 1888. Before transferring to the airport, you will drop by the Shrine of Remembrance, a memorial that honors the Australians that lost their lives in World War I.
