OVERVIEW
Explore captivating Catania independently and concentrate on the attractions that look most interesting to you. After a devastating earthquake in 1693, Catania had to be rebuilt along with seven other cities in southeastern Sicily. The resulting late Baroque architecture and innovative town planning earned Catania a UNESCO World Heritage site designation. You will likely see many of those noteworthy 17th-century buildings while wandering about on your own. Much of the architecture is dark-gray as it was constructed with tuff, a type of rock that contains volcanic ash from the eruptions of Mt. Etna. Much of Catania Cathedral – which is dedicated to Saint Agatha, the city’s patron saint – was reconstructed with that volcanic material. You may also wish to see the 2nd-century Roman amphitheater and the Collegiata Church, another landmark that was restored following the earthquake. If shopping sounds appealing, you will find plenty of designer stores and one-of-a-kind boutiques.
