OVERVIEW
Learn to prepare classic Uruguayan dishes and enjoy them for lunch with thoughtfully paired wines. This venue for this inspiring foodie immersion will be Pizzorno winery, a fourth-generation family-owned winery in the fertile Canelón Chico district north of Montevideo. The hands-on cooking workshop will be held outdoors overlooking the vineyards where nearly a dozen varieties of grapes flourish. In this idyllic setting, you will discover how to make traditional Uruguayan empanadas. The exact filling for these crescent-shaped pastries will be determined by what ingredients are freshest and seasonal. While the empanadas are cooking in a wood-fired oven, the chef will show you how to prepare alfajores de dulce de leche, a sandwich cookie with a milk caramel filling. As you dine on your creations, you will enjoy a tasting of six Pizzorno wines. Chances are, the selection will include red blends made with Tannat grapes, the unofficial national grape of Uruguay.
