Visit the idyllic castle town of Obi also known as “Little Kyoto” for its collection of old streets and buildings reminiscent of an earlier age. You’ll also spend some time in Aoshima Island, where you’ll marvel at the unique landscape created by wave erosion and visit the Aoshima shrine.
Visit to the ruins of Obi castle, built in the mid-15th century to protect the territory from invasions from clans from the north. In the 1970’s much of the castles masonry was refurbished. The main gate was reconstructed using traditional methods and using local woods. The castle dominates the well preserved and quaint town of Obi, lined with traditional shops, former samurai residences and running streams, giving it a peaceful and idyllic setting.
You’ll also visit the Aoshima Shrine. Set on the tiny island of Aoshima, facing the ocean and surrounded by tropical foliage, the shrine offers a peaceful and beautiful setting. As you walk over the bridge, you’ll see the unusual wavy rock formations that the locals call Demon’s washboard. This is due to the action of the waves, which has shaped the rocks like giant washboards.
Couples often have their wedding ceremony at this shrine, which is believed to bring luck to those wanting to conceive. The shrine is dedicated to three Gods known for granting good luck, blessings for marriage, safe childbirth and safe journeys.
