OVERVIEW
Drop by a local resident’s home for a Kaffemik, a traditional Greenlandic social gathering that centers around good food and lively conversation. On the way there, you will learn about the upcoming Kaffemik and the origins of these casual events, which are often held as open-house celebrations. Your host will be an accomplished Greenlander who will provide valuable insights into the local culture and lifestyle. You may have the opportunity to meet with an Arctic Scientist, a Shaman Healer, a former Prime Minister, or a former member of Parliament residing in the capital of Greenland. Although Kaffemik is a Greenlandic word meaning “via coffee,” beverages only touch on what will be served. The homemade delicacies may include dried or smoked fish, mattak (cubed, skin-on whale blubber), fresh-baked breads, cheeses, and berries—most commonly blueberries and crowberries, depending on seasonal availability. You will be encouraged to join in the conversations as the Greenlanders will be as interested in your life as you are in theirs.
