Cruising the mangrove-lined Tarcoles River will offer a look at water birds in particular, as egrets and herons are often seen wading in the shallows. You might also spot them resting in the safety of the intertwined mangrove branches. The most startling sight will likely be the enormous American crocodiles sunning along the riverbank as these primeval-looking reptiles can grow up to 13 feet long.
