Although modern gin originated in the Netherlands in the 14th century, the world’s largest private collection of this juniper berry-based spirit is in the Gin Library. There, you will learn to craft the perfect gin and tonic and then enjoy this refreshing cocktail, which the British army supposedly created in India to stave off malaria. Ponta Delgada is better known for its historical landmarks, which you will view up-close on a leisurely walk-through town. Starting from the triple-arched 18th-century city gates, you will pass by landmarks such as the bell tower that rises above town hall and Campo São Francisco, a public greenspace in the heart of the city. Now a museum, São Brás Fortress is a fine example of 16th-century military architecture.
