OVERVIEW
Pedal a two-person railbike along the tracks of a now inactive railway while admiring the extraordinary natural beauty around Megara on the outskirts of Athens. Draisines – more commonly known as railbikes – were invented in the mid-1850s to transport railway workers so they could easily inspect and repair the tracks. Today, these pedal-powered vehicles offer a fun and unusual way to ride the rails. In all, you will travel about 2.5 miles with stops along the way to rest and to ramble around historical attractions that include stone-and-concrete artillery bunkers that the Germans built during World War II. You will pedal atop cliffs overlooking the glistening Saronic Gulf, through a former railway tunnel and across a trestle bridge. The guide will provide enlightening and entertaining commentary the entire time, which will make the adventure all the more memorable. You may even hear harrowing tales of the robber Sciron, a local figure from Greek mythology.
