OVERVIEW
Explore two of Portland's most vibrant local markets and converse with the vendors and artisans for an understanding of the local cuisine and handicrafts. Before the first farmers' market in Portland opened in 1768, most of the food was peddled door-to-door. Although the popularity of the markets ebbed and flowed over the centuries, today the city supports several choices for shopping directly from farmers. As you browse the stalls in our first market, you may see items such as certified organic produce, wild blueberries, gourmet mushrooms or oysters farmed through aquaculture just up the coast in the Harraseeket River. The purveyors will be happy to discuss their farming techniques and offer tastings when possible. As you will discover at our last Market, Portland is just as passionate about supporting local artisans. There, you may find fine ceramics, colorful paintings or hand-crafted jewelry, along with specialty foods.

Note: This tour includes a moderate amount of walking mainly at the guest's discretion. Tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. The Farmers' Markets only open on Saturdays during the winter and on Wednesdays & Saturdays during the summer. This tour can only be done when the markets open during the season. Tour sensitive to weather conditions (Rain, wind, and sun). Tour sequence may vary due traffic conditions. External visit only.
