OVERVIEW
Learn about the history of Qaqortoq on an enlightening walk through downtown and then delve into the local cuisine by sampling a selection of traditional dishes. Founded in 1775, Qaqortoq has grown to become the largest city in southern Greenland. Still, it has only a few thousand residents and the compact city center and makes for easy walking. Chances are, you will hear about the early Vikings, the Inuits that eventually settled nearby and the importance of commercial fishing to the local economy. As you might expect, seafood will be prominently featured on the menu for your tasting. Dishes may include snow crabs, baked salmon, dried codfish and iginneq, a fermented seal blubber that is the cornerstone of the Inuit diet. Locally grown organic root vegetables will also be served as Qaqortoq sits in one of Greenland’s greener areas and gardens flourish during the summer months.
