Venture into the enchanting countryside to the lagoon town of Comacchio and on to a family-owned farm and winery for a taste of its distinctively fruity wines.
Depart from the pier and drive north to Comacchio, a lovely town lying on the protected Po Delta wetlands, home to thousands of water birds. Known as “Little Venice” like many Italian towns with abundant canals, Comacchio celebrates its scenic waterways and life revolves around them. Bridges span the placid waters, stone sidewalks follow the winding canals, and beautiful brick homes and businesses come right to the water’s edge.
Built on 13 small islands, Comacchio is closely tied to the lagoon at its doorstep. During your guided walking tour you may see fresh eels roasting on spits and plenty of other seafood specialties at the town’s charming and historical Fish Market. The best view in Comacchio is from twin-towered Treponti Bridge, which was built in the 17th century to span the confluence of five canals. Another landmark is the Capuchin Portico, a lengthy loggia with more than 140 arches.
Following your exploration of Comacchio, you’ll drive to the nearby Corte Madonnina farm and winery, an idyllic setting where grape vines flourish in the shadow of apple, pear, plum and cherry orchards. The wine produced at Corte Madonnina ranges from sparkling reds to straw-colored Sauvignons to a ruby-red blend of Merlot and Fortana grapes, aged in oaken casks. After sampling several of the winery’s most distinct offerings, you’ll re-board your coach and return to the pier.
