OVERVIEW
Gain insight into the local culture through three attractions that highlight vastly different aspects of southern Albania. After heading inland through the mountains, you will come upon the Blue Eye, a natural spring named for its vibrant color. Although its surface appears turquoise, the center of the spring is deep blue and seemingly bottomless. Be sure to ask the guide about the legend of how the spring was created. Nearby, you will find the Monastery of Mesopotami, a stone structure adorned with bas-relief images of dragons and mythical creatures that are said to pre-date Christianity. Excavations around the monastery have unearthed the remains of an even earlier complex. Back in Sarande, you will visit Lekursi Castle, a landmark that has loomed over the city since the 16th century. Besides its historical importance, the castle offers spectacular views of the harbor, one of the reasons that Ottoman emperor Suleiman the Magnificent built it.
