Explore some of the most hallowed and historical sites in and around Sakata, beginning with Go-Jyu-No-To, a five-story pagoda built in the woods on sacred Mount Haguro. Originally constructed in the 10th century and restored in the 14th century, it is still so architecturally advanced that the pagoda has been declared a national treasure. Nearby, you will find Sanjin Gosaiden, a rare thatched-roof shrine dating to the Middle Ages. It is dedicated to the deities of the surrounding mountains and blends beautifully into the natural setting. Chido Museum is revered for its collection of valuable folk objects from various time periods. As you browse the exhibits, you might see woven straw backpacks, bamboo fishing poles and sake caskets. Chances are, you will encounter fishermen at Zenpoji Temple, as thousands of them make pilgrimages there to pray to the guardians of the ocean to protect them while at sea.
