OVERVIEW
Visit a farming enterprise that uses sustainable aquaponics to grow fresh produce without harming the environment. On the way to the greenhouse farm, you will pause for photos of the Pitons, St. Lucia’s most iconic attraction. These two volcanic spires are so bio-diverse that UNESCO declared them a World Heritage site. As you will discover at Green Haven in the village of Choiseul, farming through aquaponics is eco-friendly and entirely sustainable, so it doesn’t negative affect the environment. While touring the greenhouses with one of the owners, you will gain an understanding of aquaponics, a combination of aquaculture—or raising fish—and hydroponics, in which plants grow in water rather than in soil. In essence, the waste from hundreds of tilapia fish provides nutrients for the plants in a closed system that uses minimal recycled water. It is a wonderfully efficient process with the end result being organic lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers that grow year-round. At the end of the tour you will enjoy a farm to table lunch in their on-site café before returning back to the ship.
