OVERVIEW
Visit some of the most well-known spots in and around Charlotte Amalie and come away with a deeper understanding of St. Thomas’ allure. As you ascend the hills behind the capital along Skyline Drive, the views will be extraordinary, especially while pausing for photos at Drake’s Seat. The lookout is named for Sir Francis Drake, the English explorer and privateer that supposedly watched over the harbor from there in the late 1500s. Still, no place on the island is more photogenic than Magens Bay, where you will spend hours of free time on the beach that rims the turquoise sea. Back in Charlotte Amalie, you will follow the guide through Blackbeard’s Castle, a National Historic Landmark that according to legend was the pirate’s lookout tower. Dutch settlers built it in 1679. After walking down the 99 steps that connect the upper and lower towns, you will see more Dutch-influenced architecture while exploring on your own.
