Gain an understanding of the history of East Java at the peak of the Majapahit empire by exploring archaeological artifacts in a museum and two historically important sites.
After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a relaxing drive inland to Trowulan Mojekerto, an area that was once the capital of the Majapahit empire, which lasted until the early 16th century. It is the only site in Indonesia from this time period.
Many of the artifacts that archaeologists have excavated from here are housed in the nearby Trowulan Museum. While browsing the collection, you can expect to see reliefs of deities, water spouts shaped like human figures, ancient coins and carved pedestals. Together, they present a rare glimpse into Java’s glorious past.
You will also see the remains of the 14th-century Bajang Ratu gateway, which stands in the nearby hamlet of Kraton. Built of red brick and volcanic stone, the gateway was once connected to a wall that protected a sacred building. As you will discover while pausing to take pictures, the gateway is photogenic from every angle.
More historical monuments are scattered about in Candi Tikus, a ritual bathing place that was discovered by accident in 1914 when workers were digging nearby. The primary feature of the bath is a brick replica of mythological Mount Meru, which is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists.
Following this immersion into local archaeology, you will enjoy a traditional Indonesian lunch at the Ayola Hotel.
NOTES: This tour includes approximately 90 minutes of walking/standing on mostly flat surfaces, and some steps to negotiate. Guests will not be walking long distances. Weather appropriate clothing, adequate sun protection and flat comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
