OVERVIEW
Get a wonderfully enlightening, historical perspective of the region by touring the 12th-century Poblet Monastery and the well-preserved medieval village of Montblanc. Monks from France founded the monastery in 1150 and over the centuries it has served as an abbey, fortress and royal residence. An original church stands at its heart with numerous monastic buildings clustered about, making Poblet one of the world’s largest most complete Cistercian abbeys. The complex is so extraordinary that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site. Montblanc is medieval, as well, and so many of the buildings from that time period are intact that the city looks much like it did in the 13th and 14th centuries. As you wander through the historic district, you will likely pass the royal palace, the remains of the Jewish Quarter and the Church of Santa Maria la Major. A traditional lunch follows at the nearby restaurant El Moli del Mallol.
