OVERVIEW
Discover the charms of Yuasa, the historically important town that is considered the birthplace of soy sauce in Japan. At the Yuasa Soy Sauce Company, you will learn how this iconic condiment made its way from China – where it originated – to Japan and how it is produced today using traditional methods. In essence, it involves the natural fermentation of cooked soybeans and wheat and the addition of salt or brine, a process that also gives the resulting soy sauce its distinctive brown color. Soy sauce is used for marinades, seasoning and even to flavor ice cream, a taste of which you will be offered. Free time for shopping in Yuasa’s historic district will follow. You will also have the opportunity to dine on your own in Wakayama’s seaside seafood market Kuroshio. The choices will be seemingly infinite, even though there is so much bluefin tuna that the market is nicknamed Tuna Land.
