OVERVIEW
Celebrate the signing of Norway’s constitution on May 17, 1814 by joining the parade of cheerful people marching through the streets of Ålesund and enjoy the festivities afterwards. Constitution Day is celebrated all over Norway as a national holiday that marks the date that the country gained its independence, even though that freedom wasn’t complete until nearly a century later. Unlike many parades in other countries, this one is non-military and everyone – even non-Norwegians – is invited to join the procession. As you march through the streets from Ålesund Church to the Utstillingplassen exhibition grounds, you will see lots of flag-waving, hear patriotic songs and gain an appreciation for the importance of the event. Many of the celebrants will be dressed in a bunad, a colorfully embroidered folk costume reserved for special occasions. The festivities don’t end with the parade so feel free to stay for the joyful music and speeches that follow.
