Gain a greater understanding of the history of St. Kitts by visiting landmarks that reveal much about life on the island in the 17th and 18th centuries. A panoramic drive will bring you to Romney Manor, an estate that Thomas Jefferson’s great, great, great grandfather purchased in 1625. Only five families have owned it since. After meandering about the gardens and the ruins of the former sugar plantation, be sure to browse the estate’s store Caribelle Batik, whose artists produce fine one-of-a-kind batik fashions using ancient Indonesian methods. Brimstone Fortress presents a different side of St. Kitts. Known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a tribute to 18th-century British military engineering and presents spectacular views of the neighboring islands. Even so, the most memorable view will surely be from atop the Timothy Hill Overlook, as you will see the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other.
