OVERVIEW

Delve into the fascinating culture and history of Taichung by visiting some of the most revealing landmarks in this flourishing metropolis. Many of Taiwan’s temple are dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu and the Dajia Jenn Lann temple is among the most famous. Chances are, you will see pilgrims burning incense in and around this spectacularly ornate temple, a practice that began more than 200 years ago. Standing before the National Taichung Theater will present a startling contrast in architectural styles as its organic non-linear design is wonderfully whimsical. The so-called breathing holes in the exterior walls are said to represent light, air and water – the essential elements of life. Art is celebrated and expressed in an entirely different manner at Rainbow Village, a collection of colorful homes for military veterans that a nonagenarian artist known as Grandpa Rainbow painted. He created the bright murals in hopes that they would spare the houses from demolition.
