OVERVIEW
Experience the unique flavors of Zanzibar during this spice tour through the scenic countryside. Depart the pier for the drive past the former home of Dr. David Livingstone, who stayed here while planning his explorations into the dense interior. You will then visit the ruins of Maruhubi Palace, which was built for a harem and later destroyed by fire. From here, you will proceed to a green area of the countryside for a unique opportunity to smell, taste, touch and see spices grown mostly in off-road areas that are not easily accessible. Along the way, you will learn how the abundance of diverse spices and plants grown here are used in food flavoring and preparation, cosmetics, dyes and traditional medicines. Spice packets will be available for sale during your visit. Depending on the season, you will also have an opportunity to sample some of the local edible fruits. Your tour will conclude with a visit to the ruins of the Persian baths at Kidichi, built by the first Sultan for his Persian wife. Afterward, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.
